  • When it Ends
“The hug was longer than usual. Without worrying about the light pain from her husband's overwhelming strength, the Wife held the Reporter as if it was the last time. Tears raced down her face. She gasped; in a mix of painful relief after seen him again and the uncertainty that still surrounded her child's destiny because of the ongoing tragedy. She looked for answers within her faith and his logic. They both seemed overpowered by a feeling of incompetency and uselessness before something so inexplicable. She tried to convince herself that the worse was behind them and that, soon, whatever that divine scourge was, it would be over when she received some good news. When her Husband would have no more reason to fly abroad and everything would be fine. She could go back to wonder about the joy, and hardships, of motherhood. She failed in every attempt. Fear destroyed faith, imploded logic and incarcerated hope. She felt the baby kick and smile amidst her weeping. She tightened her grip even more. She didn't want that moment to end. There was still hope.”

  • The Old House on the Hill
It was an old colonial house, with two frontal white columns. They were tall and round supporting two vast floors, plus an attic. Everything clearly decayed from the exposure to the elements; the outer walls overrun by dry vines, leaves and dust. A massive rotten oak tree hid most of the barred windows behind it. A heavy wooden door stood tall and shut in front of the building, protecting secrets of the past. Or keeping some dark nightmare locked inside? At the center, a big brass knocker, shaped as a horse’s head, held a golden hoop in its eternal bite. The cobwebs and a thick dirt layer would have been enough to indicate it had not been move for ages, but the whole scene felt ancient, transported from another reality – a tormented bygone Era when men had no dominion over the land or control over sanity – to that very place. The house was huge. It was old. And it should to be left alone. Nick and Clive knew it. No one was to challenge the old house on the hill. Their brothers, fathers and grandfathers knew that. Every kid in Stonesfall had heard of the place, at some point, no matter how briefly, they all considered hiking uphill and knocking at that door. Even though no logical explanation was ever offered, it made some weird sense. It was undoable. Too dangerous. Or both. The place was untouchable. Forbidden. And there they were, only a few steps from the door that should not be touched. But Nick’s eyes saw something different. They saw opportunity and glory. He had to go for it.
